We
can finally see some of the effects the architects designed into the Great Room.
The beams that run around the room help break up the space and keep it from feeling
so tall. Below
the beam is all cherry wood with a natural finish. Above the beam is plaster.
All
this wood works here without the room getting too dark because the upper walls,
ceilings and the high windows keep enough light bouncing around to brighten it
up.
We wanted to keep that wood-look for the floor. Cherry isn't hard enough for flooring,
so we used a hickory that seems to match pretty well.
It
was tough finding the right style of area rugs for this room. We ended up with
some oriental rugs that seem to help create the "old feel" for the house.
Our inglenook
is a cozy area with a nice combination of stone and wood. The fireplace and the
flooring are made with the same Niagra Dolomite as the outside stone walls. And
the bookcases and panelling are cherry, like the rest of the inside.
