| Habitat
for Humanity: Hutchinson
In
1995, town leaders of the rural community of Hutchinson, MN formed a new Habitat
for Humanity chapter as a way to get people of different social and economic backgrounds
more involved in their community. Initial
fund raising efforts in Hutchinson have varied from car washes to fun runs; and
over $10,000 dollars in donations have already been contributed. Churches,
businesses and civic organizations have provided the basis of support in Hutchinson
by spearheading efforts to contribute time and resources. The
volunteer workforce has ranged from people with little or no building experience
to professional contractors and tradespeople who contribute their skills free
of charge. The
first house built by the Hutchinson chapter took 9 months to complete and is now
occupied by a single mother and her two children. Crow
