The focus of this project is to define what brings character to a house and how to incorporate it into new construction. House with Character: Defining Character
Dean Johnson and Robin Hartl follow the construction of a high-end home with emphasis on design, products, and rich architectural details. They show historical and contemporary examples of houses with and without character; consult with project architects; and explore the history of the area.

House with Character: The Foundation
Introducing the floorplan; the foundation is poured; and the first-floor deck is framed.

House with Character: The Shell
Examining the shape, dynamics and economics of the shell as the above-ground walls are poured; exploring window and roof design options.

House with Character: Roofing & Windows
Discussing the effects of daylighting and views; installing redwood fascia and concrete roof tile.

House with Character: Exterior Spaces
Discussing erosion control and prairie landscape; constructing stone retaining wall ; installing stamped concrete walkways and terraces.

House with Character: Mechanical Systems
Exploring the character of the interior spaces; installing radiant heating, geothermal heat pump, and a stamped concrete driveway.

Installing insulation and veneer plaster on the inside, and cast concrete and stonework on the outside.

Installing doors, cabinets and trim; applying stucco exterior; starting landscaping.
