About the videos:

In this set of video tapes we show what we did to make a beautiful Prairie-style house more family-friendly. Our solution includes creating an informal family-oriented area that is separate from, yet related to the existing formal areas of the house.

In addition, we made the family entrance to the house (up a flight of stairs from a tuck-under garage) more useful by expanding and reconfiguring the mud room to accommodate all the sports and school gear that comes with teenaged children, and moving the laundry room to the main floor just off the mud room.

In the process of designing the addition we explore the design elements that comprise the Prairie style and integrate some complementary Japanese design elements. We also make design choices that would create a connection between the living space and the surrounding gardens. For example, the beams that form the trellis outside continue through the kitchen and sitting room, while the stone for the patio flows indoors to become the floor of the porch.

Materials featured in this project include beams, flooring, and wood ceiling milled from salvaged timbers, vertical grain fir and rift-cut oak cabinets, soapstone countertops, pro-style kitchen appliances, Euro-style laundry machines, and home theater equipment.

The original Prairie Home Remodel video set is also available.
In this two-tape set you will see what we did in 1995 to turn a rather nondescript house into a stunning Prairie-style home.
